Transcript Terence Lee: Good afternoon Mr Leo, we are one of the RE group from 1H. We are here to interview you about our research topic. How addiction to Facebook game affect RI sec 2’s academic performance. Mr Leo: Um... Terence Lee: Mr Leo, can we start now? Mr Leo: Yes, we can. Terence Lee: Ok, err..... First question. In your opinion, in what ways do you think Facebook games are addictive to RI year 2s? Mr Leo: Um... there are lots of Facebook games. So, err... generally games are fun, right? So, i mean, the functions of games is that its meant to create fun. Ok? So anything that is fun has the ability to draw and attract. All right? So............ in that, er.... is the basis of addiction, ok? Because err... if the pleasure derived from the game , is higher than my current level of contentment with whatever I’m doing or even my life, then the games become a huge attraction that draws to me, Right? So in that is the basis of addiction and attraction. Terence Lee: Ok, err...second question. have u counselled any RI year 2s with Facebook addiction problems? Can you elaborate more about the methods how...on how you can counsel them? Mr Leo: Well, not particularly Facebook yet, but yah, computer games generally er... the kinds of cases that i come across, okay? Er... Most people wouldn’t...wouldn’t see er... using Facebook as a form of addiction yet. Ok, alright? Er... as in most students they don’t see it that way because that is like MSN sometimes they just keep their Facebook and Twitter on and they respond... they they don’t really see a problem with that sometimes. Until...Until,they are so addcited to it that their lifes become haywire. Okay?So most of the cases that I met are gaming addiction cases, you know? Err.... Yah. Terence Lee:So errr how you? Can you elaborate more about the method that you counsell them? Mr Leo:Emm the method that I counsell them? Terence Lee: Yah. Mr Leo: So for gaming addiction cases you have to see what are the roots behind their addiction, okay? But different people play games for different reasons. Now…games are generally fun. Err… people draw to them. Er..but some people draw to them because they are unhappy with their social life, therefore, you you find that they got drawn to games that provide social alternatives. For example, Maplestory. Ok, have you play Maplestory before? Terence Lee: Erm, yes. Mr Leo: Yes right Ok.So ah… Some people are very addicted to Maplestory or other MMORPG games if you understand what that means, that’s actually… Online role playing games. Massive multiplayer online role playing games. Basically they are very social in nature. Er......Those people who are who are likelier to draw to them are people who do not have very do not have a lot of social er…they don’t feel very attached to surely to people. Ok ya, they are the one that drawn to social games.then there are some other reasons: some go for the adrenaline rush and maybe to them they take the thrill in first player shooting games or dota you know they like to challenge each other and there's that thrill there, okay? Yah. Terence Lee: And third question, do you think there are any other ways to curb Facebook addiction Mr Leo: Any other way to curb Facebook addiction? Er… ya ya there are. Terence Lee: But can you tell us the most effective ways to do this? Mr Leo: A good relationship with family and friends. That's the best way to stop any kind of addictions including Facebook addiction. When a child is happy, er.. in his life because of...because he has very rich relationship with people okay?Not... not just through interaction online but offline in real life.He has a rich relationship. Then he feels happy most of the time then therefore he is less pre disposed towards the need to be drawn to games that create that fun environment to give them a happier feeling. Because they are happy, they don’t have to be drawn too much to me. Right, so this is the best way to curb. Terence Lee: So err… can you share your perspective on Facebook games? Mr Leo: My perspective of Facebook games? I think er..erm…Well my perspective on Facebook games probably would... may sound old, traditional because..conservative because I am older. Terence Lee: Ok Mr Leo: I belong to the older generation so erm ya… So I think ya... you are asking me about how I feel personally? Terence Lee:Ya Mr Leo:I feel personally. I am... I am not really someone who enjoy online interaction a lot. Ok and online games doesn't attract me that much, alright er… so obviously Facebook games doesn’t attract me overally that’s all. Alright ya. Terence Lee: Ar… How do you think Facebook addiction affects RI Year 2 students’ academic performance? Mr Leo:erm… well I am not too sure about that..I haven’t done a research to find out you know how addicted. You all are Year one right? All:Ya. Mr Leo: Specifically, I haven’t done any research to find out how addicted Raffles children are. I know generally Raffles students play lesser computer games. But I am sure most of you are into Facebook games right? And sometimes keeping Facebook there, here and there you find pockets of time, people get involve in games right? Here and there, sometimes, may be a group of friends take on addictive games like Mousehunt, like you know Farmville and things like that. Right so so ah….But is there a direct impact on their academics, I can't say for sure sure, but I believe there is a slight impact but not much, okay? And not everyone. I believe a pocket of students some of them might have...might be involved too much in games and therefore, it has affected their studies... It has affected their studies.ok but generally most RI students are busy purposeful engaged in project meetings, interviews even during the holidays. CCAs you have your plate full and hence your time on online is kept strictly recreational ok meaning the games fulfilled in function of providing recreation to you and you don’t overdo it. Ok and once in a while you want to feel happy as in not happy, once a while you want to play some games ok you play some games then that’s about it. You feel ok then you come out of it then you do your work. Generally most of the students are like that. But there are pockets of students ya then may go on to play. Terence Lee:erm so question 6 Mr Leo:erm ya Terence Lee: Do you think that Facebook addiction is common among RI Year 2 students? Mr Leo:Hm....No, I don't think so, er... mainly because of my definition of addiction, okay, my definition of addiction. Er... I like to define it in a very scientific way, er...when you talk about addiction, you are talking about many factors thatan individual display, er... which randomly disfunctional it is like, hence, many people would say er...u are not addicted, so what are some of these factors er... number 1, Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo: Terence Lee: Mr Leo:
